Cyber Attack Shuts Down Internet Across Nevada County Schools in California

On October 9, 2024, a cyber attack disrupted internet service across the Nevada Joint Union High School District (NJUHSD), affecting schools in Grass Valley, California, and surrounding areas. The breach, traced to an IP address in the United Kingdom, prompted district officials to disable internet access at five high schools, including Nevada Union and Bear River. Other local districts, such as Grass Valley and Nevada City, also lost connectivity. Superintendent Dan Frisella stated that while the investigation is ongoing, no student data was compromised since it is stored on a separate system. The district is collaborating with state cybersecurity experts to assess and contain the breach.

In the meantime, students and staff have adapted to offline learning methods, using printed materials and engaging in hands-on activities. Teachers have embraced the challenge, turning to creative lesson plans that do not rely on technology. While the internet is expected to be fully restored by the following week, some schools are already seeing service return. The incident serves as a teachable moment, highlighting the district's reliance on digital infrastructure and the importance of cybersecurity preparedness.
