Cyber Intrusion Disrupts Brown County Government Operations in Indiana

On October 23, 2024, Brown County government offices in Indiana experienced a widespread internet outage, leading to early closures and service disruptions across multiple departments. Initially described as a technical issue, the disruption was later identified as a “network intrusion” on October 26. This intrusion impacted various county services, though essential departments such as the judiciary, health department, and 911 emergency services continued operating without interruption. County officials, supported by state and federal agencies, are investigating the breach and working to restore full operations.

The outage affected the courthouse and other key government buildings, leading to limited public access to county services. As part of ongoing mitigation efforts, residents are encouraged to call ahead to confirm service availability, as some functions remain offline. The Brown County IT team, led by Laura Minett, is collaborating with law enforcement to determine the source and scope of the intrusion. The county’s internet service provider, Smithville Internet, has not been implicated in the incident, and there is no indication of impacts outside Brown County government networks.
