Town of Summerville Faces Ransomware Attack

The Town of Summerville, South Carolina, experienced a ransomware cyberattack starting Thursday, July 24, 2024, impacting various municipal systems. Despite the intrusion, vigilant monitoring systems quickly identified and contained the attack, significantly minimizing damage. Officials have confirmed that no evidence suggests any data or sensitive documents were compromised. However, the Embargo ransomware group claims to have exfiltrated 1.71TB of data from the Summerville Police Department. All municipal departments, including police, fire, and public works, continue to operate normally, though some services have been temporarily adapted, such as handwritten police reports. The town is collaborating with state and federal cybersecurity teams to investigate and conduct a forensic review of all systems. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available, and the town remains committed to transparency and maintaining the safety and security of its residents.
